I have an appliance that was ordered online from the USA ,your power is 120v, 60 Hz , here in RSA we have 230v50Hz . The person who bought said goods pluged it into wall socket and bang went the transformer. The secondary side of transformer is 12v 600ma. So whether the primary side is 120v or230v should be irrelevant so long as sec is 12v . I want to know if a sec side of 12v500 ma trans will do the job or will the 100ma difference will cause the fan to run slower

Solution
The 100mA difference may cause the transformer to die but likely won't. Most of the electronics we deal with are constant voltage and pull the current that they need from the source, since the fan is getting the full 12V it will try to run like it normally does and it will suck down the same current it would on the other transformer. On the upside most items don't draw close to all the current that their power source can supply, that would be too risky and cause everything to burn out really quickly if something was even slightly out of spec. Your 12V fan is likely only sucking up to 400mA if it shipped with a 600mA charge so you should be fine.
