So I bought the PCE N53 network card by asus, and it is a PCI-e x1 card. On my motherboard (z87 pro 4) I have a PCI-e 3.0 slot and a PCI-e 2.0 slot, both x16. I have my gpu (geforce 770) in the 3.0 slot, and I am trying to put the network card (x1) in the 2.0 slot (x16). I've read that this should work, however the light on the card is not turning on when the computer is on. I've installed the drivers from the cd and everything, however the card will not show up in device manager.

I then tested the wireless card from my other desktop, which is also a x1 card (the other computer had a x1 pci-e slot) in the same slot and it will not recognize that either. Is this all because of the slot, or is there something I have to do on the computer or in bios to let it know that it is a x1 in a x16 slot? Any answers are appreciated!

Nothing to change in the BIOS related to that.

PCI-e x16 slots are officially backwards compatible with x1 cards so it is should work in theory but it depends on how strictly the motherboard manufacturer has complied with the official PCIe slot specifications.

On your board it seems they haven't complied very well. They've assumed that the x16 slots will be be used only for graphics or sound cards.

However, according to the ASRock product page, the Z87 Pro 4 has two PCI-e x1 slots, so I don't understand why you're trying to use a x16 one.

Slot count:

1 x PCIe 3.0 x16, 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16, 2 x PCIe 2.0 x1
