My 5 year old seagate GoFlex Desk external hard drive has malfunctioned. It is not recognized by my windows 7 computer. The white light is on but I can not get the computer to detect it. I have tried rebooting several times, unplugging all cables and when I got to click on start>computer it is not there. Its out of warrentee I would assume so I don't know what I can do to retrieve my data. Can someone help me. Thank you so much.

Hi there BettyS,

Is the drive recognized by Device Manager, Disk Management or BIOS and does it require some action. If it shows in Disk Management, you may be able to recover your data. If it is not recognized by the BIOS, most probably you will not, unless you use the services of a data recovery company.

Some basic troubleshooting steps you can start with are: changing the cable and the USB port. It will be also a good idea to attach the drive to another computer.

Data not backed up to another drive? very unwise to rely on a single drive as they can fail without warning, in fact all drives will fail at some point.

Try testing it with SeaTools, and if it fails the test I'm afraid only an expensive data recovery service can do anything with it. SaeTools is here: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/
