read / write retries, can I limit the number of attempts in windows 7

I have a drive playing up. I beleive there is windows registry setting which limits the number of read retries. Can anyone tell me what it is ?

  1. You can sometimes limit retries and reallocation at the firmware level for certain models, if you are intent on data recovery.
  2. I read somewhere that by default windows will retry possibly millions of times which is what causes system to hang when you have a bad sector. And that you can specify a value for number of read/write retries. It is that registry setting I am looking for. Do you know which it is ?
