hi every one
i have a question that really freaks me out .
here is my hardware info

Mainboard : Asus p9x79
Cpu : intel core i7 4820K 3.7 GHz
RAM : Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 2x8 DDR3 2400

i recently noticed that my processor only supports 1866 ram , now here is my question guys
is my ram useless right now ? i mean if i used a 1866 ram it wouldn't make a diffrent with the one i have (2400 ) ?
did i spent my money for nothing ? would it harm my machine ? :/

Xproyect has provided an incorrect answer, whereas TheJourneyman's response is indeed true.

Your motherboard controls at what frequency your RAM should operate, not the CPU. However both your motherboard and CPU will only recognise up to 1866MHz. Purchasing RAM at 2400Mhz is not "useless," you'll still be able to utilise the full speed.

When you first insert your RAM into your motherboard, your motherboard will detect it as 1866MHz. However your motherboard supports 2400MHz, and in order to enable that you must boot into your BIOS, thereafter manually select your RAM frequency at 2400. Save the changes in your BIOS and exit; you should then be running your RAM at 2400MHz and NOT the default recognised 1866MHz.

To be honest however...

No, your board should support XMP profiles upto 2400. You should just have to enable your XMP profile in your bios and it will step up your ram timings to their optimum rating. We can argue about whether 2400 ram is actually worth the extra expense, but you did not waste your money as far as your rigs ability to make use of it.

As a side note, with the x79 platform, you really should have gone with a 4X4GB kit to take advantage of the quad channel memory controller. That is kind of a lost opportunity in this case unless you can return the ram you got.

Check my sig, I run a similar machine.

Even if the RAM is not on the Motherboards QVL it usually will work fine. Though the Voltage recommendation for Ivy Bridge Processors is 1.5v for Memory. I am not sure what Sandy Bridge is it could be the same or close to it Just make sure you Use the 1.5v on the RAM, according to Intel using higher than the recommended Voltage setting for RAM can void the warranty, Something I did not know Until quite a bit after I had my KHX 1500Mhz RAM running. just trying to be informative...that's all. Chances are if your using the X79 Chipset your OC anyway. so..yeah

To be honest however, if you purchased 1866MHz RAM you may not even notice the difference between 2400MHz. Regardless what is done is done, and you should still utilise 2400MHz.

All the best. :)

i knew quad chanel qorks great but as i would buy 6 more 8G ram to have a 64G ram machine i guess it's a good choice , thanks bro
