No more wired internet :(

Ok, so a few months ago I upgraded my old surfboard modem to the sbg6580. It's worked fine for months. Recently, my computer has been plagued with problems, most probably virus related, some probably long overdue reinstall related. Either way I reinstall windows 7. Then I pop in my motherboard disk and reinstall all the chipset drivers, lan drivers, etc. When I first built the computer, doing the exact same process, I had internet immediately. This time, nothing. I unplugged my little wireless usb dongle from my htpc and installed it in my desktop, wireless works fine (I'm posting this on the forum with the problem pc over said wireless now) I spent hours trying to install, reinstall the drivers for both the onboard ethernet card as well as a PCI-e ethernet card I had installed in the case. I even reinstalled windows a second time, all to no avail. I pulled out my laptop and plugged it into the ethernet coming through my wall, got nothing. I used my multimeter on the wire to make sure nothing snapped int he wall, but the wire is good. I finally pulled my old modem out (I'm a packrat for a good reason) and plugged it in. I didn't need it to run internet just to check if the ethernet connection worked, and to my surprise my ethernet on both desktop and laptop recognized the old modem. That tells me that my months old surfboard 6580 isn't transmitting over the wired half anymore, and I have tested all four ports on the back of the modem. It's wireless works fine, just not the wired. The wired half worked before I started reinstalling windows, yesterday afternoon. I left the wire plugged in during the entire reinstall process. Could something, during the reinstall, have fried the wired portion of the modem, or maybe was it just an odd coincidence that it decided to crap out at that time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Forgive my crappy grammar, been up all night trying to figure this out ;(

I would look into contacting your ISP to ensure that the modem you have that you tried is provisioned for your address so that it can establish a connection. (the old one you kept stored)

I work for a cable company who also uses the Motorola Surfboard, and that can sometimes be the issue.

Yeah, that's not the issue at all as I'm using the modem in question as I type. The wireless works but the wired suddenly stopped. The signal from the cable company can't do something like that with a cable modem. I've paid every bill in full as I got it and the wired ports worked two hours before I reinstalled Windows and they suddenly stopped working. ;( I've had the modem for about 6 months now, stays on 24/7. Maybe there was just a dud circuit in it x.x

My apologies, I was under the impression that the modem was the issue. My apologies again if you've answered this, as there was a lot of info above.

Check these things (while hardwired to modem causing issue):

1. In 'change adapter settings' located in network/sharing center, verify that your "Local Area Connection" isn't showing "network cable unplugged" - if it does, then the issue will be the Ethernet cable, or port on NIC or Modem.

2. If it's showing that the cable is plugged in, and you are connected, go into the properties for the "Local Area Connection" and go to properties for "Internet Protocol Version 4" and make sure you are obtaining IP/DNS automatically.

3. If that's automatic (unless you have things set up statically for a reason), then open up command prompt and run ipconfig to verify you have a non self assigned IP address (169.XXX.XXX.XXX) - if you do, then run "netsh winsock reset" command in cmd prompt w/ admin priveleges and reboot PC.

4. If you have a valid IP address (either private 192.... or public (from ISP)), then the issue likely wouldn't be within network as WiFi is working, and I would be exploring more of something within your NIC.

Again, I apologize if those things have been checked, but if not, definitely start there and let us know what results you find.

Maybe I didn't explain the problem too well.

1) Only the wireless on my surfboard 6580 works.
2) The wired ports don't work.
3) The LAN adapter on my computer does work as I've trouble shot this with an old modem. The old modem may not have been able to connect to the internet, but it still functioned as a router with it's own 192.168.0.1 address that I was able to access.

What I'm wondering is, can I restore the functionality of the wired ports in my 6580 through a hard reset, or is there some setting within the modem that could disable the wired ports. Given how this problem sprang up during a reinstall of windows, either some signal was transmitted to my modem during the ethernet driver install phase, or the modem just decided to crap out at that given moment. Either way, I'm still able to use the wireless with my usb wireless dongle, but that means I can't use that dongle on my htpc ;D

Ah, much more concise, my apologies again.

I would say that is definitely a coincidence.

Since you've confirmed that your NIC is not the issue, do a hard reset, if that doesn't work, then I would absolutely get in contact with your ISP assuming they provided it to you. Again, this is coming from someone who does tech support for an ISP and based on those tests if a hard reset fails and you were our customer, we would be swapping that for you.

Nah, only the dumb rent cable modems. That's my opinion anyway. It'll probably mean a trip to Best Buy unless I can find the receipt from when I bought it and if the warrantee is still good, that is ;D
