So not even a month ago I built my first computer, and I love it. As I was watching a Newegg video I heard that there are some AMD cards that are having price drops, which is very convenient, considering I just spent $200 on the r9 270, which is now $170. Although the card is great, with the r9 280 only $230 now, I'm thinking of upgrading.

I would like to know if I should go the AMD or NVIDIA direction. I know that a lot of AMD cards don't support AA, which has been a problem in a few games, but I also like how games such as Battlefield run really great on AMD cards. If I did go NVIDIA, I would probably be looking at the GeForce gtx 760.

Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

AMD and Nvidia (in my opinion) are extremely close right now. For the price, AMD is much better with the recent price drop. That being said, Nvidia is still strong.
AMD | Nvidia
270x ~ 760 (edge to the 760)
280 (better than the 760, not as good as the 770, basically in between)
280x ~ 770 (edge to the 770)
290 ~ 780 (edge to the R9 290, but this changes depending on the benchmarks. These cards are pretty much equal, and only depends on your budget and what games you play)
290x ~ 780Ti (from what I've seen, definite edge to the 780 Ti)

The AMD side is usually cheaper than their Nvidia counterparts. Nvidia has some nice features, AMD also does too.

When it comes down to it, some games run better on AMD, others on Nvidia. If you play...

AMD for budgets and Nvidia if you have no limits. Look at these benches for the 270X. for the 280, add 10-15 FPS.

Go amd. The r9 280x is on the same level as a gtx 770 which is around $300 today. Also amd right now is winning over NVidia with lower prices and just recently adding their own form of shadowplay.

The r9 280 is roughly around the same are as the gtx 760 I believe. The extra vRAm would help with higher texture games. AA/AF relies on the extra vRAM being available if I'm not mistaken, because they are practically higher textures at that point.

When it comes down to it, some games run better on AMD, others on Nvidia. If you play only a few games, pick the one that runs the best. Otherwise, pick your budget, and go for the best you can pay for.

Seeing as the gtx 770's are around $330, and the r9 280 is between the 760 and 770, my best bet is probably to go with the 280. Thanks for the help!

No problem, that is what I've seen through experience and benchmarks. If you have any questions feel free to ask!
