Hi

Recently my laptop updated to Windows 8.1. After doing so, my laptop started disconnecting from the internet, failing to connect. Hanging. Crashing and just being otherwise unusable. I installed anti virus and anti malware programs (which jad previousoy expored) and CCleaner and googled around various fixes (such as the update reverting my network adapters power saving features).

It worked fine for around 1 or two weeks until suddenly the wifi cut out and upon restarting discovered I had to update. After updating and restarting probably close to a dozen times, my laptop has been nearly unusable with all the aforementioned issues. I tried various fixes which I googled which only seemed to male things worse.

Eventually I went for a system restore to before the update. Upon starting my machine up I received the black screen with mouse cursor problem that many people have had. Eventually my machine would get past this black screen by itself (sometimes it would just start working after) but then I would have all the same problems and it was seemingly worse.

I attempted to undo the system restore from safe mode but received a lengthy error message (which I have saved) informing me that it was unable to complete the restore and advising me that perhaps my anti virus is preventing the action. I turned off my anti virus and attempted to system restore one my time to prior to the Windows Update and upon attempted to log in, there was significant lag and I was greeted by the black screen. Eventually an error message presented itself after the black screen abated warning me that system restore probably didn't work due to an anti virus. "An unspecified error occured during System Restore. (0x80070005)".

I have also attempted to system restore from safe mode which also failed.

Is there anything I can do to get my laptop working again? I do a lot of travel and my laptop is my lifeline.

Thank you

Solution
Put it back how it was before W8.1

To put it back, you'll have to re-install the original Windows and all the applications again. You'll need to back up any data first.
generally, you have to uninstall your AV software and boot into safe mode and do a system restore.

I would then do the update and reinstall a updated version of the AV software.

you might also want to disable fast boot.
also, depending on what hardware you have and the vendor. vendors really don't support a update from windows 8. windows 8.1 (they just provide a list of things that will not work because they don't want to update the drivers)

After reading http://www.satinderspace.com/2013/10/steps-to-remove-windows-81-blank-screen.html?m=1 this in another TH thread, I rolled back my graphics driver and my laptops performance improved slightly. When I log into windows it feels faster and smoother, but I still have trouble navigating around windows menu s. It easy becomes too slow and unresponsive, or freezes. I often have to wait for a very long time for it to recognize my D: and wifi cuts out after a maximum of 10 minutes (and if I am playing a game, that game freezes).

I attempted to update the drivers on my Inter(R) HD Graphics 4000 display drivers, but the option to roll back is grayed out, and when I went to the intel download center to update, it could not detect anything. I tried a manual download but was informed that my laptop did not meet the requirements to install the latest driver.

If it helps at all, my laptop is an MSi with
CPU: IntelRCore i7-3630QM
VGA: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M / 2GB GDDR5
Windows 8.1 64bit

Are there any more suggestions, or should I look at a fresh install (I don't have an install disk and am even unsure how to go about this).

You got your answer I think. I can't believe Win8.1 is still this much unstable.

Okay. I "refreshed" my laptop after rearranging my files (I needed some 35 odd spare gbs on my HDD to run the refresh) and it seems to be up and EXCEPT...

Now when I attempt to connect to the wifi, I am prompted to enter a the router label PIN. When I do so, it gives me an error message stating:

"Can't connect to this network

Windows can't get the network settings from this router."

When one week ago before the refresh (also before the major problems) the PIN was sufficient. My phone(s) still connect, and my housemates (in whose room the router is located) are still connected and have not chabged anything on their end.

How can I solve this problem? Should I start a new help thread?

I suppose once this is resolved I should pick i7Baby's response as the solution.
