hi,
I see there is a deal on Micro Center for these two AMD FX6300 and Intel G3258? May I ask which one is better on performance?

FX6300 with MSI 9701-g46 / Gigabyte GA78LMT-USB3

G3258 with MSI Z97 PC Mate Socket LGA 1150 ATX Intel Motherboard.

Thank you,

Either of these are a good proposition if your keen on overclocking them.

If you can push the G3258 up to 4.8Ghz it performs similar to a 3770 ... great result ... if you can get a decent overclock ... prolly on water though as Haswell is not as overclock friendly as SB. That first site's results seemed overly optimistic if you ask me.

The FX6300 is a cinch to overclock comparably ... and the results are good ... that site didn't show that ... the comparisons were with other stock cpu's.

The cpuworld comparison was written by an idiot with little knowledge of anything past reading brochures.

I leave it to others to show the FX6300 overclocking results as I won't have one to play with til the weekend ... on a Seidon watercooler...

Are we comparing a six core to a dual core? Seriously?

The Pentium will perform better on a computer aimed to net sufing, web, music, movies, office, etc...
The FX will perform better on a computer aimed to do heavy tasks.

It depends...
If you are running multi threaded apps such as rendering, the 6 core FX-6300 will do more work.
If you will be gaming, the G3258 will be superior in most games. That is because most games can only make use of two cores. If your game is one of those few that are truly multithreaded like FSX, then the 6300 will be better.
Find some reviews, here is one:

To my mind, if you are on a budget, that is the chip to get assuming you will overclock a bit.
The Z97 motherboard gives you all sorts of future upgrade options including 14nm broadwell.
'The best part is that the G3258 is so cheap that you can throw it away without much remorse.

That rating can give you a general idea, but since is automated and sometimes there is a lack of info in one of the CPUs, I would not rely on it.

Sadly my old rig won't take a Haswell cpu to try one ... but at that price ... it would be hard to not buy one and squeeze it like a lemon.

If you can get crashman down here to comment I'd listen to his advice.

The article was quite good I must say.

Unless your rendering go intel, got that pentium for the fun of it and to finaly move from amd, and @4,7 ghz it beats my fx 8350 @5,2ghz in almost all games, only exception till now has been watch dogs, the single threade performance is alot better on intel its ipc is way ahead of that of fx

Nice, you got rid of a 8 core for a 2 core. Now, enjoy your 5 fps gain in games, because gaming and office will be the only things you will be able to do with a shitty two cores.

If you need multi-core performance the FX-6300. If your only worried about single or dual then the Pentium. I know someway somehow you will want or need multi core core performance. Then it is the FX 6300.
You must Choose. Choose wisely. Never use one review to make a choice. It should be Many.

Upgrade to a multicore, low-power, newer broadwell then?

Both those motherboards are massive fails. Both 4+1 phase. The GA-990FXA-UD3 or GA-970-UD3P are really fine boards for cheap. Myself I have two Sabertooth R2's for my 6300 and 8320. The Gigabyte GA78LMT-USB3 is MicroATX which is not good with FX processors. The MSI 9701-G46 is known to actually burst into flames when trying to even moderately overclock the 6 and 8 core Vishera CPU's. Google is your friend.
