I have an Asus Z87-A motherboard with a set of 2.1 surround sound speakers that are connected to the board's front speaker out connection (the green port). Around a few months ago, the power to the left speaker would periodically die out and come back again. Sound would still come out of it, but it contained a lot of static and was very faint. It has recently died again, and it seems like it's not coming back anymore. I have done numerous things such as reseat the audio cable, check the working order of the speakers, etc., but now I am pretty sure that it's the sound chip after the front panel audio started failing in the same way. Do you guys think that's the case?

I'm thinking about RMA'ing the motherboard or getting a sound card if the onboard is the problem. What route would you suggest?

Is Asus still making Z87 boards? I'm guessing that they still might have some in stock at this time. This option could be a huge hassle just for the sound. Everything else is in perfect order.

If I'm getting a sound card, what would you recommend for something that's less than $100? My speakers and audio equipment in general is not that good. The 2.1 system I use is an old harman/kardon HK395, so I don't need and expensive card that produces the clearest signal.
