Light gaming (nothing incredibly graphics intensive), multitasking, virtualbox/VMware, HD video, internet browsing, etc...

I've heard that an i3 dual core is just as efficient as it's quad core AMD counterpart because of hyperthreading, but will it multitask just as well? Would the performance difference actually be noticeable between these? Will the clock speed of the AMD make a noticeable difference from the i3?

i3-4130 Dual-Core 3.4GHz

vs

FX-4350 Quad-Core 4.2GHz or FX-6350 Vishera 6-Core 3.9GHz

Thanks for you guys' opinion.

The I3 4130 beats the FX 4350 and even goes head to head with FX 6300. It is the better choice. I already build a system for Christmas present with 4130 and it performs amazingly well. Could not even tell the difference between my 2700k and the I3 in general tasks.

The new G3258 is a great little chip for $75. Particularly if you have a motherboard that allows you to raise it's multiplier. Z97 for example.

Past that, I think the most important component for your usage is a SSD, at least for the "C" drive.

The price / performance value of 4130 with a h81 motherboard is unbeatable. The Pentium+Z Motherboard+Overclocking has the same performance for 1/3 more spend. 4130+H81 motherboard is 150 bucks. The Pentium+the cheapest Z board+30 bucks cooler is 200.

The i3 will be faster, or you could go the 3258 z97 route with a solid upgrade path for other k series.
