GPU Advice Needed

Hi,

I recently built my first PC, and I just wanted to get a little advice on my GPU. I ended up going for the Asus Radeon 280x, because the shop (where I was going to get the GeForce 760 from) had a crazy one day sale on some AMD stuff, so it worked out cheaper to the get the superior card in the end.

So far the system is running great, I've been playing taxing games in high settings no problem, except for one thing. In Skyrim, on Ultra settings, I noticed some weird horizontal lines on textures like cobwebs and wet floor, but not on things like stone - when I lowered the settings to High, everything was fine. Any ideas what this could be?

Could it be my GPU, my power supply, maybe my monitor or cables (only using DVI atm, not HDMI, and it's a fairly old monitor).

My rig atm is:

AMD FX-6350 CPU
Asus Radeon R9 280X
Asus M5A78L-M Motherboard
2x DVD drives
2x HDD's
Samsung SSD
TP-Link Network Card
2x Antec Case Fans
Antec P-100 Case
Antec Neo Eco 620c PSU

Also, out of interest, what are normal, okay temperatures for a GPU to run at? Mine is normally 30C-35C just on the web, word processing etc, and goes up to about 60C while gaming - is that normal and okay for the health of the card?

Cheers for any advice - much appreciated,

Tom :)

It's well known Sykrim issue. It's not fault of your hardware or software, in Steam Workshop (Skyrim modding website, available directly on Steam) search for "striping fix", download it and everything should work well. If you need help with the mod feel free to ask.

driver/compability issues, Did you install the GPU driver from the disk? get the latest driver from AMD web, and also try to get all avaiable patches/unofficial patches from steam workshop/skyrim nexus. 60 C is very fine, I think pitcairn can handle more than 90c cmiiw

Ah thank you very much - that's good to know (much rather it be that than a hardware issue).

I also just noticed I was using the VGA compatible output, rather than the DVI output on the graphics card (not sure if that will make a difference though haha).

it wont make the difference for artifacts problem you are experiencing, BUT using DVI can greatly improve image quality since VGA is obsolete for high resolution

dvi is digital output where as vga is analog. when you convert an analog signal you loose some quality which means the colours arnt as accurate as if you used digital out. other than that and the max supported screen rez theres little difference and wont be the cause of your issue.
so just update your drivers to the latest whql versions on the amd site or choose the beta versions (beta versions can cause other issues that whql wont)
also make sure skyrim is patched with both the official patches and the community patches found on the skyrim nexus.
