Ok, so right now, my rig is a FX-4100 at 4.0Ghz, motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-78LMT, a MIS HD-7770(no OC), 8gb (2x4gb) ADATA DDR3-1333, 500w generic but supirsingly good for its $15 price PSU(i've used it several times, no problems), Thermaltake V4 case, and a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb 5,400 rpm laptop drive i salvaged from a friend's old laptop that had a broken screen.

I have to buy a new mobo/cpu/ram set for the home computer (the one everyone uses, this is my person rig), and so i was wondering what cpu was the best? I'm actually going to put my cpu/mobo in the home pc and use the new one i buy for me. Right now, i'm leaning to the Intel G3258 because at microcenter it comes with a MSI Z97 PC Mate Socket LGA 1150 for $100. the FX-6300 comes with a-USB3, also for $100. The gigabyte is pretty much the same mobo i have right now, just with added USB 3.0 (which i don't use anyways). I'm getting a thermaltake NiC C5 for overclocking whichever one i get. The main thing i want is something with SATA 6gb/s ports, because later on i plan on getting a SSD. Also, im going to upgrade gpus to a 270x or something around there, so i need a CPU that won't bottle neck it.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, i read a review on techreport of the g3258. They OC'd it to 4.8Ghz with the same cooler i was thinking of getting, and at that point it competed with stock speed FX-8350's, i5's, and even some i7's.

I'm probably going to stick with that, especially since the bundled mobo supports SATA 6.0gbs, so i can use a SSD at it's full potential, and then later on upgrade to an i5 if i need more cores. Oh and don't worry ill get a better PSU as well once i buy my 270x, but for now this PSU is good enough.

The 6300 is a great chip, it games well, and can be overclocked with a decent cooler for more performance. The extra threads of the 6300 are going to help, too, games are starting to use them, and dual cores are becoming outdated.

They are about the same for gaming - http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-G3258-vs-AMD-FX-6300

If they're the same price, I would go with the pentium. Then later you can upgrade again to a better cpu on a the Z97 motherboard.

Generic power supplies are never that good. You should upgrade to a tier 1, 2a or 2b tier per http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su... eg Seasonic 520, XFX 550 or Antec HCG 520M to keep your 7770 and 270x happy.

Both can overclock well. Right now I'd say the FX6300 is better but the upgrade path for the Pentium is pretty sweet, if you think you will have additional funds in the future then go with the Pentium, if not then the FX6300 is fine. Neither will bottleneck the r9 270x (Pentium may need OC).

if you wont oc then get the g3258 with h81 and you'll save more money, and later upgrade to i5 haswell or haswell refresh
