I am running windows XP with SP3 on desktop PC. I can connect to the internet via LAN (hard wired) but I want to connect via wi-fi as I do with my other units (cell, lap, xbox etc) I have verified my router (DLINK) and the PC is listed with an IP, but when I try to create/add a wireless network in XP it does not open as if there are no files (?)
I checked the services and enabled them all - rebooted but still nothing. the 'connect to a network folder' is empty -
No updates done, or new installations - restoring to a previous time does not correct the issue. read that some DLLs might be missing but have no clue what to look for.
I am pretty new at this so if you have suggestions for this issue (in layman terms please lol) it would be appreciated
If you need more infor please let me know - not sure if you need anything else
thanks!

Quick checklist:-
1). Does your desktop actually have a wireless adapter? The vast majority of desktops don't.
2). Are it's drivers up to date?
3). What frequency is your is your wireless router/access point operating at? This could be 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz depending on what the router is capable of. You router could be operating at a different frequency from your desktop.
4). What encryption is your router/access point using and does your wireless adapter support it? The most secure for home is WPA2 and is the default in most routers but not all wireless adapters support it, especially older ones.
5). What obstacles are between your desktop and the router? Things like walls, different floor levels, furniture and doors all reduce signal strength, sometimes to the point where even if everything else is correct your desktop simply doesn't have enough signal to operate.

Hi Paul

In answer to your questions:
1) there are 2 adapters - one is a Dlink air hog G510 and the other one is onboard ethernet - I disable the onboard one but it did not change anything

2) I downloaded drivers to USB and tried to instal but system told me that they were up to date.... both adapters were enabled at this time so not sure if I should do it again with the onboard one disabled (?) (FYI -the Dlink adapter worked fine with the Lynksys)

3) the router has both frequencies

4) encryption is WPA2 - always has been no changes except- when I got this DLINK I created a new SSID and new key - at one point I was able to access the wireless 'create/add' function in the network wizard it pick up the network and I entered the new key but now the function will not bring up anything and there is nothing in the connect to a network folder

5) the PC in the garage (attached to the house) and the router is in the utility room about 15 ft away - (adjacent to the playroom) I can connect to wi-fi with my phone, tablet and an older laptop (HP Pavillion) with no problem

thanks for helping :)

Hi,

If the Dlink air hog G510 is installed properly, you should be able to see any wifi networks (not just your own wifi network) in the area nearby. I would suggest you uninstall the driver and reinstall the driver with the original CD driver that comes with it.

This Dlink air hog G510 is a PCI card, which could also means its not sitted properly on the motherboard. Power down the pc, remove power cord, re-sit the card and try again.

Not to rely on your wifi signal strength, you can use your smart phone and enable tethering and put it by the side of the pc (this will eliminate any signal strength issue). (this just for troubleshooting). If your pc is able to see and connect to your phone wifi network, then your Dlink air hog G510 should be working fine.

The other possible problem is the Dlink air hog G510 antenna is damaged.

If you are able to see your wifi network but cant connect in. Most probably its due to your router settings.

1. E.g Enable by MAC address only.
2. Router is set not to broadcast wifi signal.

Hope this helps
