I'm doing my first build and I wanted to make sure I don't mess up on my RAM purchase. I've got an ASUS Z97-A motherboard, an Intel i7 4790k and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. The 212 Evo is very large. Do I need to be careful about the heat sinks on the RAM fitting under the 212 Evo? Either way, what kind of RAM do you recommend? I want to get 2 x 8 Gb. Thanks for the help.

Ram speed is not important to intel cpu's.
Probably a 2 x 8gb kit of 1.5v ddr3 1600 ram would be fine.
Heat spreaders are mostly marketing, and only good for overclocking ram to high levels.
Buy low profile, it is usually cheaper anyway.
With the evo, ram is usually not an issue. If you orient the fan to exhaust to the rear you will get better cooling and will clear most ram spreaders. Even then, one can slide the fan up a bit to clear, or use the fan as a pull fan .

What will you be doing with the rig? That can help determine what freq you might want to look at...I generally always look to GSkill sticks first, they are the leader in DRAM these days, second would be Corsair

I'd go 2133/9, in 2x8GB. It's a good pick especially for the video work, with your combo I'd look at the Snipers or Tridents from GSkill....If in the budget 2400/10 would be good also. That's where most start that do editing with my clients, heavy users often go 32GB

I went with your advice and got the G.Skill Sniper 2400 2x8GB. Thank you both for your advice.
