There's an older generation AMD APU inside a notebook I used to use.
I don't think it was even a top one, the Notebook was only about £200.

I don't even know why it was struggling so much. The screen had a resolution where the pixels were about the same size as your average western baby. It took about 36 billion years to load up Chrome and all this was on Windows 7 Starter (Did you know you can't set a custom wallpaper on that? Yeah, I didn't either).

It was marketed as a 'Lifestyle' computer so that's how bad it was.

I have had periods of the squits, where a toilet was never close enough, and I would genuinely take that experience over using that damn thing any day of the week.

Athlon X2 5200+. I paired it with an 8800 GTX back in 2007 and was immediately disappointed. Should have went with a Core 2 Duo at the time to support that card. A few years later I upgraded to a Phenom II X4 955 and the video card finally was able to perform like it should.

You can actually turn this around and put it on yourself. It is buying something not suited for your needs. Need to do homework before pulling the trigger.

An amd phenom 2 X4. the last AMD cpu i personally used was the great AMD Athlon 64 on socket 939. that thing was a beast. but more recently (a few years ago) my friend got a phenom 2 x4 and it was utter CRAP. BF3 played like crap on his pc even overclocked to 3.6GHz where my trusty core 2 duo played it without flaw. i will never use any AMD cpu again.

That is utter crap. A Phenom II X4 like a 965 BE is still an excellent cpu and a very credible gaming cpu. Where as a Core 2 Duo is not. They aren't even close.

It wasnt a 965 BE i think it was like a 920. its multiplier was not unlocked so we had to OC through the FSB. the main reason why i believe it was the CPU is because not only did he have a better video card than mine his ram was faster to DDR2 1066 compared to my DDR2 800. even on benchmarks the thing had a hard time competing with my overclocked core 2 duo.

A couple

The AMD Turion TL-52 (a Core 2 Duo E6300 1.8 GHz trounced it). At 1.5 GHz it's more suited to a cheap laptop than a $2000 desktop PC (in my HP Touchsmart iq-770). It completely bottlenecks the GPU on PCIe and makes playing any moderate games horrifying. The good news is it can be swapped out for the faster 2.2 GHz Turion.

The other is any Intel Celeron made before 2011. The old ones are dinosaurs. An Intel Atom is light years faster.
