Hello,

After forcing a shutdown of my laptop, I can't get it to start anymore.

I get a page fault in nonpaged area BSOD with the suffix NTFS.sys. This error is visible for a tenth of a second before the computer restarts again.

Same happens if I try to boot via safe mode.

Same also happens if I boot via the XP-installation CD (!)
(In either safe mode or via installation CD, the message is displayed and it doesn't restart. I filmed the process to be able to read the BSOD at first to be able to read it...)

I tried swapping the memory around (2x2GB) and even replace it with its old memory (2x1GB) but the error stays. I read on here it is mostly the memory, but I got the error a dozen times with different memory configurations and am now typing this on the same laptop with a different harddisk...

One more clue it is the harddisk: I removed it to resque some files and hooked it up to a Vista desktop via USB: the moment I attach it, that computer too gets a BSOD!!!!!
This time it is a "bad_pool_caller" BSOD...

I'm somewhat computer savvy, but by no means an expert, so go slow...

My idea is that it is actually a windows error, but even so, I can't understand why it would crash a different computer as a USB drive...
Haven't tried a live CD yet, I dabbled with them before, but I couldn't really find my way around it. I think my Adroid phone can (spin up and) read USB drives, but if there is a minute chance it is a mechanical error, I will steer clear of trying that...
The computer is ~8 years old, the harddrive just a few months (after a mechanical failure of the previous one due to dropping it).
I cannot produce an error report as sometimes is requested of the laptop, but may be able to do this from the desktop if needed (but a link to a good "how-to" would be appreciated).

Dell Latitude D620

I regained control of the hard disk with active@ boot disk (unlike Vista on the desktop, now the laptop does not restart the moment I plug in the problem-harddisk as a USB drive). But I ran Chkdsk which fixed some issues and ran fixmbr, but when trying to boot from the hard disk, the error remains.
At least I could save some files incase I can't fix the hard disk.

I'll look into getting the error logs, as they should be on the hard disk. If there's a simple link that explains how to do this, I am all ears.

Thanks for the advice, but I am concentrating on the hard disk first for now.

Solved. Was all virus related.

Downloaded Clamwin (as adviced by/from-within Active@ boot disk) and it found a load of virusses/malware. Then ran Malwarebytes and it found even more.

I always have AVAST (free) switched on, but by the looks of it, some stuff got through.

I mounted the drive as the bootdisk again, selected booting via the XP installation CD and somehow it ignored my selection and booted without any problem from the harddisk (possibly because the CD drive is actually a USB-drive in this Dell if I understand correctly, so maybe I should have selected USB-device instead, but that's just guessing).

The minidump files were of no use. There were 2 from February, but no files from the recent crash.

Thanks!!! I will still run the memtest.
