Storecenter general failure

I have an iomega storecenter ix2-dl that I put 6TB (2x3TB) into. It is configured as one drive. Somehow it, along with a laptop and my router, got flakey when my daughter downloaded something questionable. I had to reinstall the software on my computer to be able to access the storecenter and now it shows (correctly) that 1.72TB is used but the shares, users, and groups have
disappeared and I can't access my files. How can I restore them non-distructively?

from your backups naturally.
Unfortunately it doesnt sound like you made any so your work just got alot more difficult.

Can you remember which method was used to create the 6tb volume?

It was set up as a single drive.

I got it recovered.
Turns out when I took the drives out to (unsuccessfully) recover my stuff I put them back in the wrong slots.
I just switched them and I now have access.
I learned that one must mark their drives before removing them and put them back in the way they were.

Don't forget that you still need to make backups of important files. All harddrives fail eventually and you need to plan for it.

And just in case you dont realize it but a backup is an additional copy stored on another device.
