Is a six core processor worth it?

Hello,
I am wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade from a four core processor to a six core processor for gaming. I do not really do any photo editing or anything like that so that is why I am wondering if a six core processor would benefit me in any way? Also would I be better off having a six core processor for future game or just for the future in general?

If you don't do anything that requires a six core processor now then it isn't worth it. Most games still don't make full use of a quad core CPU so moving up to six cores will gain you almost nothing. You will see more impressive results by moving to a SSD or upgrading the GPU.

Personally, I think future proofing is something I tell myself when I want to spend a great deal more money than I should. :)
The six core AMD chips are relatively cheap for a reason, their performance blows in comparison to Intel. I'd opt for a good core i5 chip for a pure gaming rig(spend the savings on the gpu).

hunter is right. most games are still struggling to use 4 cores, let alone 6. its only viable if you are upgrading from a dual core cpu like an old athlon x2/x3 or c2d/pentium sandy. since you are already rocking a quad, don't even bother upgrading unless its a c2q proc and you are upgrading to an i5/i7.
