Upgrading CPU and mobo. Having trouble deciding.

So back in November i built my first pc and kinda made a mistake. I got a crappy cpu/mobo combo (fx 4100 and a msi g46-970a). Now months later the cpu and mobo aren't up to par. So i need to upgrade. I was thinking of upgrading to a i5 something and a asus z97-a. The hard part is the cpu. I was thinking of getting a i5-4690k but it is a tad to expensive for me right now and i would wait until about September to get it. Problem is by then why would i not just wait for broadwell? And if i get a cheaper (non k i5) i would lose the freedom of overclocking (which is one of my hobbies). But if i get something like a i5-4590 i could buy the cpu + mobo next month. So in short get a 4690k in September, get a i5-4590 next month and lose the freedom of overclocking (which i really want) or wait and see what broadwell has in store? Thanks in advanced for your opinions.

Specs: fx-4100
g46-970a
asus gtx 760
16gb corsair vengence 1866mhz
corsair hx 650w
wd caviar black 1tb
samsung 840 evo 120gb

It is tricky to decide right now. If you are using heavily threaded workload applications then the Haswell E may be a good option. I have seen quite a few "Rumored Specs" that say the i7 5820K will have 6 cores and is supposed to be priced as the 4820k and 3820 were at launch.
Aside from that I would personally go with a nice Z97 or H97 motherboard. Right now the MSI Z97M m-atx MB is a decent price and on sale on for some retailers. Z97 motherboards give you the option to have more features and OC your ulocked CPU fairly well. you could always just get a Z97 and Pentium G3258 now and OC the heck out of it. upgrade the CPU to an i5 or i7 later or go with H97 and an i5 4590 or 4690 which would not break the bank

i was looking at this but from my local shops the asus z97-a is$10 cheaper. All i would need to do after getting this is to get a cpu cooler (which i don't mind waiting a couple months for). But with this build i have to wait until septemeber to buy.

Yeah i was thinking about the z97 mobo + the g3258 but would the g3258 be a down grade from the fx-4100 just because of the 2 less cores and threads. I mean obviously in single threaded tasks the g3258 would be way better but in games like battlefield 4 which run better on 4 core cpus, would i see a decrease in performance?

Side note i don't really do a lot of heavy rendering or anything that uses a lot of threads. But I would still love the i7 5820k... if i could afford it XD.

A lot of people get the Asus Z97-A, it's a good board.

If you're a fan of overclocking, I wouldn't get a locked chip. You won't be satisfied, and there is nothing worse than falling out of love with something as soon as you get it. Then you'll just be looking to Haswell anyway.

It looks like the X99 chipset will be released in September and Haswell probably in November/December. If you are waiting until September anyway, I would say you're better off waiting out the year (keep saving) and look at what the new tech has to offer. By that time you'll probably have enough to get a cooler at the same time too.

problem with waiting is that my cpu is already not up to par and even mildly over clocked to 3.93ghz and I really could use the extra power of a new cpu. If i wait to broadwell then my cpu will be even further behind in performance. What Vitric9 said (for me to get a good mobo + g3258) is a really good idea because it gives me a new cpu + mobo and the option to wait until braodwell.

The only problem with that is given the different power requirements of Broadwell, there are questions as to whether it will be supported by the current Z97 chipset, despite having the same LGA 1150 socket as Haswell.

I thought intel said that Z97 was going to support broadwell chips? If anything they'll just release a bios update for Z97 just like they did for Z77.

from What I have seen and read so far Broadwell is going to focus on low power processors first. Right now there is not a lot of Specs available for all their upcoming CPUs though i am pretty sure they have confirmed the line up will include a "Y", "H", and "U" series processors. The H series will be available for Desktop. the i5 and i7 is rumored to have 4MB to 6MB of Cache(L3) and that is jsut a bit of what is going to change. I myself am going to skip the first few Broadwell releases. The optimal thing to do now based on this limited info is get a Z97 Motherboard for sure. I am not sure which CPU to get but that is why the G3258 is so attractive at that price point especially on a Z97 platform. That can be our secret so The prices stay low enough for the Pentium G3258.

I just did some more research and looks like the guy who wrote the article about compatibility was confused. I should have looked into it more when i originally read it, but i took it at face value. The power changes were made in the 9 series mobo's, so should be fine with Broadwell.

Also by the looks of this leaked roadmap, the Broadwell -k chips could be as late as Q2 next year. I can't imagine you want to wait that long, so the G3258 is probably the way to go.

Yeah i've pretty much decided im going to get the g3258 and overclock it. For a aftermarket cooler im thinking of getting a hyper 212 evo or a seidon 120V. Would it be worth it to pay the extra $20 to get the seidon over the hyper 212?

Please do not get that EVO....It is better than the Intel Stock but almost any aftermarket options are. And to the extent of the reviews People will be glad to replace the Stock cooler anyway. I Have one I have been using for a few months now and I am going to get a noctua. Buy it right or buy it twice. If you saw my Temps you may be convinced not to buy the EVO.
