Test Benchmark before OS install?

Hi,

I recently purchased a kingston v300 (yeah, another one falls victim to the ole bait n' switch). The website I got it from says the disk will have read times of 450 MBps, etc. for the 120GB version (If it doesn't, I'll be returning it.)

What I'm wondering is, can I do some sort of benchmark test before I install an OS on the disk?

Would a bootable linux disk work to check the drive before I bother to install an OS on it or should I hook it up to a friend's desktop and run AS SSD on the drive?

If not, I'll install the OS and run AS SSD and see how it stacks up. If the "old" v300 can get speeds of 450MBps with this program, then I'll be testing the one I get with this program. Maybe I'll get lucky and get an old SSD instead of the new ones that get 30% of the original speeds.

Thanks for any help,

Bryan

Advertised 450MB/s Read/Write speeds are with ATTO, not AS SSD.

ATTO uses highly compressible data to test Read/Write speeds. Highly compressible data is the easiest type of data for any SSD to Read/Write.

AS SSD (and CrystalDiskMark) use highly incompressible data to test Read/Write speeds. Highly incompressible data is the hardest type of data for any SSD to Read/Write.

Advertised speeds for the 120GB V300 using AS SSD are up to 180MB/s Read and 133MB/s Write.

That's great and all, but I read all the reviews for the 5.05 getting great read/write speeds,
thessdreview.com
is just one example. This is what I was expecting, not the lesser disk with shoddy, secretly swapped parts.

Thank you guys for your quick replies,

Bryan
