difference between thumbdrive and flashdrive

hi there, awhile ago i attempted to update my bios for my motherboard, using a flashdrive, then going into bios finding the update and doing the actual update, i did it like the tutorials said then my entire computer basically crashed on me, i had a friend fix it and its okay now, matter of fact im using it to write this, but ive been confused since that day as to why it didnt work, then it occurred to me that it might have been using a flashdrive instead of a thumbdrive that caused it to not work, i just want to know if my prediction is correct
