Hey Guys,

I know a lot of you will be thinking this question has been asked before.... but please, hear me out.

I just completed my first ever PC build - its a low to mid range gaming rig.

AMD FX 8350 Eight Core (Overclocked to 4.3Ghz)
Sapphire R9 270x Dual - x 4Gb Graphics
8Gb Ram
GIGABYTE GA-78LMT USB3 AM3+ Mobo
AVP-EL03B Case (Front panel - 1 USB 2.0 & 1 USB 3.0)

Ok, so first off the case I have has the USB 3.0 header cable and the USB 2.0 header cable already wired to the front panel, but the 3.0 cable also has a 2.0 header cable split off from it close to the actual connector. Because my 2.0 and 3.0 headers are close together (on mobo) and I had enough headers, I plugged them all in initially. I installed window (7, 64bit) and everything came to life with no errors shown in device manager.

Before really trying any of the usb ports, front or rear, I installed the mobo and graphics card drivers. Mobo drivers included USB 3.0 drivers (VIA). Now, when I plug anything into the front USB 3.0 port I get the constant disconnect/reconnect but while it is in its connected state the device works fine and then in disconnect state it obviously does not.

Next I tried removing the 2.0 header cable that splits off from the 3.0 header cable and I still have the same issue.

I have tried updating drivers, power management options (advice found in various forums), multiple usb devices confirmed working on my laptop.

Anyone know what might be going on?

Things like that are usually related to your case having grounding issues. Some of them are even causing your PC to reboot after you plug in anything into your front USB ports. And it is usually ONLY the front USB ports that cause trouble. I would suggest you to try with a different case. This one was likely cheap, huh? ;)

Hi herrwizo,

Thanks for your response. Do you really think it's that straight forward? Even though there are so many other threads with high end case with very similar issues?

I really don't want to have to start stripping it all back down, but I guess it's my only option if that's the only explanation available.

There are some high-end cases with that issue as well, it is not only limited to the low-end ones. Some Coolermaster's cases are notorious for this. Nothing is really straightforward (in life or anywhere for that matter) but this is how I solved most of the "front USB problem" issues so far. Nothing to lose here. Unless you can live with that and ignore front USBs alltogether....

Also, does anybody know how exactly I should configure the header cables?

I have one USB 2.0 header cable and one USB 3.0 cable which makes sense since the front panel has one of each also. The confusing thing is that the 3.0 cable has a 2.0 connector as a kind of a 'spur'. When I look for pictures of 3.0 header cables I don't see any with this 2.0 spur so I'm not entirely sure what to do with it.

Thanks.

Ok, thanks for that. Maybe i'll try one of those neat looking open air cases :)
