Pretty cool right? It's only $615 with all peripherals. I didn't want to go AMD because later he will be upgrading most of the stuff in there. Is this a quality build? Will it be able to run non-demanding games like minecraft and flash games?

Yeah this will run minecraft fine at around 30 fps(frames per second) maybe higher and flash games also , this build would be fine ,
Tip: If this is the build you will be getting , for a better performance you can make the backgrounds on windows 8 to a classic type which enables you to game with less lag and more fps. The monitor will be great as he wont need to be turning his head as much which is good for long minecraft gaming sessions! The graphics card will be grand for minecraft and other games too.
The ram is perfect for this build.

Over all i would say this is a perfect build for the light gaming genre especially for minecraft and flash games , he may even get away with some games off steam too , you can check their site and they will have their system requirements for everygame too

I hope i was helpful and i wish you luck with your build!

If I removed the GPU and saved enough for an i3, then later got a GPU, would that be a better choice?

This seems to be a pretty solid build for less demanding games such as minecraft and flash games like you were looking for. The motherboard would also support a wide range upgrades in the future like you mentioned also so it would serve that purpose well.

Two suggestions I might give and these are based on my personal experiences/ preferences would be maybe considering windows 7 rather than windows 8. To me it works just as well as 8 and might save you some money. Also maybe spending a few extra dollars and purchasing a Radeon R7 250 2gb card could be worthwhile. I have a Sapphire R7 250 in my first build and it performs well for me on slightly more demanding games games like Crysis 2 and Call of duty 4. Now my CPU is a quad core so that probably plays a part as well, but paying a few extra dollars on the GPU now might mean that you won't have to upgrade the GPU in the future when you do other upgrades.

Again these are just suggestions and i realize that money is always the deciding factor, but your current potential build seems very capable of the light gaming you have in mind so I see no problems there. Good Luck!
