r9 290 will work on a 600w

Solution

No, but it's really not much of a difference and the 770 runs cooler and on less power
Corsair GS series is a quality PSU. The AMD's specs call for 48A on +12V rail for the entire system, exactly the maximum this PSU can provide. 12V rail is not only used by the VGA, but many other components, so this would certainly work, but the PSU would be working under rather high load. Still, there is likely nothing to worry about considering the quality of Corsair's GS series.

EDIT: For more headroom, this one will do just fine as long as you don't Crossfire:

The R9 290 has been known to consume, at absolute maximum load, 372 Watts of power. It averages at more like 250 Watts, however.

Given that it's quite a power-hungry piece of equipment the more Wattage you can throw at it, the better, however, a 600w PSU will be more than enough to allow the card at around 80%-90%.

Just make sure your PSU has the correct PCIe power connectors to power the card.

i have an intel i5 2500k

Get the 770, just slightly less performance but it runs on less power so you won't have to upgrade your GS600
