So I wanted to start getting into YouTube and I was wondering what mic to purchase. I can afford the Blue Yeti although I'm scared of crashing a burning on YouTube, and losing money I could have spent on better stuff, do you think the Blue Yeti is worth it for someone just starting YouTube? Or should I go with a Blue Snowball or Atr2500?

Not a big fan of EBay, I prefer Amazon

the atr2500 is a good microphone for the cost. it is about 75-80% the audio quality of the at2020usb and quite a bit cheaper. it is not built as rugged so you may need to be careful you do not drop it or bang it around but it should be sufficient for your needs.

in fact you could get the mic, a stand and a pop filter for $100 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00JOS5YUA/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1405377114&sr=1-2&keywords=atr2500

the at2020usb is one of the better mics that is used on youtube (along with the yeti which is also great) and has quite excellent vocal clarity.

the snowball is cheap and has alot of features (the ice is cheaper yet and has limited features) and it definitely is not bad however its not in the same league as the yeti/2020 or 2500.

click the "headphones" link in my signature. while its not done yet, i do have some information on there about microphones you may want to read.

another thought... if you already have a nice pair of headphones you could always use a modmic. its $50 and has pretty respectable sound quality considering its a boom mic.

So straight up, which route do you think I should go?

do you already have good headphones?

do you prefer boom mics or desk mics?

how good does audio quality need to be?

what is your preferred budget?

will a 3.5mm output mic work for you (do you have any issues with your soundcard)?

--------

answer those and i could tell you.

I prefer Desk Mics

I'm doing YouTube Commentaries so I would like the quality to be really nice

My Budget is around $120 USD

I would prefer a USB mic but if 3.5 mm output is needed I'm okay with it and my sound card is on board for the MSI z97 gaming 5 which I believe is Sound Blaster Cinema

Thanks :)

if you want cheap but decent quality and being able to hear your voice in real time... $66
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1405379894&sr=1-1&keywords=atr2500

if you want the same thing but with a stand and pop filter $99
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00JOS5YUA/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1405379894&sr=1-2&keywords=atr2500

if you want a better mic then $129
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B001AS6OYC/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1405379875&sr=1-1&keywords=at2020

if you want that better mic AND being able to hear your own voice at the same time in real time (without lag) then $169
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020USBPLUS-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00B5ZX9FM/ref=sr_1_3?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1405379875&sr=1-3&keywords=at2020

another good mic is this one and it has lots of features packed into it $109
http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Yeti-USB-Microphone/dp/B002VA464S

----

the yeti is a good price and has the most features however i personally prefer the sound of the 2020 more (i dont own either... just from hearing recordings.) the yeti is also really big in size.

i dont think you could go wrong with any of them though.

Do you think the AT2020 is really virtue the extra $26, or do you think a yeti and pop filter would be better?

personally i prefer the 2020's sound and i like the fact that its not huge. i also like audiotechnica as a company since i own a pair of headphones so perhaps i'm a tad biased but i will openly admit that.

watch a few youtube videos where they test out the mics and judge which you like for yourself.

do be aware the yeti has many more features.

this is how big the yeti is http://a.images.blip.tv/GeeksTech-TheBlueYeti720p874-174.jpg

if the mic will be close to you then you want a pop filter. you can make your own though out of a coat hanger and pantyhose but the bought ones look better.
