PC worked one day, not the next

Hi, I just built my first gaming pc the other day and it only worked that one day. I took it to my friends to use their internet to download drivers and updates, then when I got home it would not turn on. I troubleshooted as much as I could: I took everything out of the pc and started all over with the build. I redropped the cpu in and reinstalled the cooler. The weird thing is, with just the cpu and gpu in I could get the motherboard to turn on but little speaker they give you for post beeps was beeping repeatedly (I assume its because I had no ram in). Then I would turn it off and try sticking in ram but then it wouldnt work (remember it had been working with the ram a whole day prior). I then took the ram out and tried booted with just the cpu and gpu again but it wouldnt. After several attempts later I could get it to turn on again with just cpu and gpu (again with repeated beeps) but it was sporadic. I could turn it off then try to turn it on again and it would not work. I tried my friends ram and psu and still would not turn on. I also had my gpu in his pc a week prior to make sure it would work so that cant be the case either. It would seem to me that this leaves the mobo and cpu as the likely culprits. Except I read that cpu is not often the problem.
So I rma'd the mobo and sent it back today, but would like to hear what everyone thinks. I had the new g3258 cpu and asrock z97 anniversary edition (which was "made" for this anniversary cpu).
