I just built my new computer. I have a msi gaming 3 motherboard, a samsung 840 evo ssd, wd blue hdd, and asus optical drive.
When I go into my bios, it doesn't recognize my hdd, ssd, or optical drive. The optical drive light doesn't turn on, so I don't know if it is a psu problem. I am running in AHCI right now, and I tried IDE. Help, I don't know what to do. I connected the sata data and power connectors to the drives, so the only thing I can think of is that I have a motherboard with defective sata ports, or my power cables from my psu are bad.

make sure on the motherboard the ssd and hard drive are on the intel sata ports. some mb have 3 party sata chipsets. put your hard on the hard drive if it has power it should spin. on some of the newer bios on the x87/x97 go into the bios turn off secure boot and make sure under efi bios both efi and legacy boot device are turned on.

All my sata ports should be intel sata ports. I can't find secure boot in the msi bios 4 but I have found and made sure the efi and legay boot is on. My hard drive doesn't seem to be spinning though. Perhaps I need to connect more than just a sata data cable and a sata power connector? The sata power cable didn't click in and it seems to be loose on my drives--as if it were not plugged in. But the sata power cable doesn't go any further in the connector.

the sata power and data are keyed..make sure the clips are not snapped off.

I solved it already but thanks for you help.
I found a thread from a while back where someone solved the same problem by hitting the connectors in with a hammer. All my knowledge aboout building stopped me from using a mallet, so I ended up just using a lot of force.
