AMD or Intel?

I'm looking to upgrade my computer soon, I cant decide if I still want to stick with AMD or to try an Intel CPU.

Which one is better and why?

Solution

Since explaining it technologically would take forever and you likely aren't looking for anything in depth; the simple answer is each FX "cores" are just extremely weak. Clock rate and core count are very, very small facets of the CPU performance formula. Architecture is the main ingredient, of which the FX series has a very weak one.

In almost all tasks, the strong, well-designed Haswell architecture of the 4670K can far outperform the Piledriver architecture of the 8350 in almost every way.

Again, I won't get...

I use it for gaming.

I have about 3.5k to blow on my computer :p

Joker what makes Intel superior though? an AMD 4.0GHz (octocore) is about $230 while an intel equivalent is about X2 X3 the price of AMD. Just curious.

Again, I won't get too in depth as that would take time. The simple answer is just the differing strengths in architecture.

Clock speed doesn't determine how fast a cpu is from another anymore. It all is on IPC. That is why a intel core i7 4790K clocked at 4.0Ghz can beat the fx 9370 which is clocked at 4.8 Ghz.

Its settled, Ill try Intel. I was thinking about getting Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon 4.0GHz 8MB unless anyone has a better suggestion? I do have to get a new motherboard to support it after all :p

Yea the Intel CPUs get more done per every Mhz than AMD. That is the biggest advantage, the architecture is just better.

Then there are a few parts which go into a CPU. Two of the most important parts are the integer and floating point units. AMD is only a kind of fake 8 core CPU. Typically there is one floating point and one integer unit for every CPU core, but AMD uses two integer cores for every floating point unit. So that 8-core CPU of AMDs has 4 floating point units and 8 integer units, and can act like a quad-core processor when the floating point unit is being used 100% and the integer units aren't being used as much.

Ya the I7-4790K is a beast go for it.
If you have 3.5K to spend on a Computer then buy a new Beast that would eat anything that comes at it maybe with a 4k monitor too

Not unless you want to go into the ultra extreme market and buy one of Intel's 6-core CPUs. Otherwise that is the best one without a doubt.

Yeah, for your budget I would either go for the i7 4790k, or the i7 4930k. I have the 4930k, and just run it at stock because there is no point on overclocking it right now, and probably won't be for another few years. It is a beast in gaming and all the other applications I use it for. I had a similar budget, and ended up pretty happy with my build. So I am sure you will like yours too, whether you go with the 4790k or the something else similar.

The i7 4930k is actually a 6 core processor and I picked mine up for $500 - $550 in December. It is still quite a bit more, but you do get two extra physical cores...and with hyperthreading it gives even more threads.

So for an extra $200 or so, you go from....
4 core with 8 threads
to...
6 cores with 12 threads

Sure you lose the higher clock, but you can always overclock if you need to, and they do offer a bit different features.

Check out the comparison to see if it is right for you:

Correction: I did get my CPU on sale, so you may have to wait for a sale to get a better deal.
