How to wire my house for better connection?

So my PC is in my room and my modem and router are in my living room and the connection between is wireless. Recently, my wireless adapter has begun to randomly lose connection or just disconnect so I figure it is better to make it a wired connection instead of wireless. My question is what is the easiest and fastest way to run the ethernet cable from my living room to my room without just buying a long wire and running it up the stairs and whatnot. Also, if I got a seperate router and moved that closer to my room and used an ethernet cable to connect my PC to the router (which would be connected to the modem by wire as well) would I get the speeds as directly connecting my PC to my modem? Thank you guys for any kind of help! :)

Ethernet cabling has a max distance of 300ft, if the cable is good you will not notice a difference in a 7ft cable or a 170ft cable. Modem->router-> ethernet run->pc will be the same as modem->ethernet run->router->pc.

Since your home is a multi-story home this adds a larger level of difficulty to running the wire. If the wall of your room and the living room is the same wall just on different floors then it is not too bad to do, if it is not then you would have to drill up from the first story to the second story and from second story to attic, then go across the attic to the wall of your room and back down (or if you dont have an attic but have a crawlspace it would just be the reversal). Its not impossible by any stretch as its...

Its not impossible by any stretch as its done all the time; but it requires a moderate level of skill, knowledge of how your walls are built, and a couple hundred dollars in specialty tools.

Now if it is the exact same wall (meaning your room is directly above the living room, or is the room right next to that room/wall), and there is no insulation or fire braces in the wall then you could just need the one hole between the first and second story, and be able to "fish" the wire down from the second floor to the first.

I recommend running CAT5e/6 cable as my first choice, but it can be difficult and expensive in multi-story homes unless points are very close. Another alternative that is far better than wireless is powerline adapters -- only use the newest 600Mbps adapters, which will deliver close to 100Mbps with much greater reliability than wireless.

I have found over the years that the powerline speed charts from HERE are fairly accurate. Avoid plugging into a surge suppressor and place any big motors (like floor fans) on 4-6 foot extension cords to attenuate their interference and you will be good to go.
