Is this possible to do. i7-4930K paired with 8x8GB Vengeance RAM and an Asus Board. I contacted Asus on if I could and the only response was I don't know off the top of my head. I just need 64GB of RAM and I liked the processor. The processor says # of channels is 4 so did that mean I can only use 4 sticks of RAM or does that mean it accepts 4 different dual channels? Any help would be great. I wanted to use a P9X79 LE if that os possible.

The number of dimms depends on how many the motherboard can hold, and in this case it can handle 64GB and it also support 8 dimms http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79_LE/

The RAM speed compatibility is driven by the CPU, but that particular board supports 64GB of RAM in an 8x8 configuration, so yes.

Ok so what your saying is the Processor can use 32GB at a time and the other 32GB will be on reserve since its only 4 channel?

I dont know the answer to that question, I'm hoping someone else could answer that question, but all you need to know is that the CPU will use as much RAM it needs, and also that you are good to go with 64GB RAM on the motherboard.

Im just going to use it for a mine craft server that has mods in it so it required a lot of RAM. But if what your saying is true it should be good.

http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ according to this site 64GB can only host 1 Play plus yourself on a server. it also requires your internet speed which you can check on this site http://www.speedtest.net/
Edit: Wait nvm lol, the site does it in Megabyte not Gigabytes false alarm

Also you dont need 64GB of RAM to run a mincraft server, 8GB will do the job with the mods and everything

Its for a very large community for my friends. I have a 1Gb/s fiber line at the office so thats the only reason I was concerned. But you said if I buy the 8x8GB set the computer will recognize it has 64GB of RAM and use it. Thank you for your help!

I said it will use as much as it need, it will not use all of it. 8GB is sufficient for 47 Players plus yourself and mods. 64GB is overkill and you are wasting money.

That's not quite how it works - the CPU will be able to access all 64GB of RAM simultaneously, accessing 2 dimms per channel. Each dimm will be accessed at the same speed (that speed is determined by the slowest stick of RAM, if you're mixing sets). How the RAM gets allocated per core depends on what program you're running, but it will be even across the cores, i.e. in CS6 you can allocate 56gb to your cores (56/number of cores), with the remaining 8gb allocated to additional programs, apps, functions, etc. The RAM gb allocated to core use will also be drawn evenly from all 8 dimms (56/number of dimms).

Outside of some niche programs, 64GB is nuclear overkill for most people. For the use you're talking about, as I understand it 64GB will barely get you in the door.

Not that this changes anything but when I said "the CPU will be able to access all 64GB of RAM simultaneously", I should have said "the CPU will be able to access all eight sticks simultaneously". The first version made sense when I wrote it, but not when I read it. Senior moment...
