Which cpu should i get

I'm thinking of upgrading my cpu and i don't know which one I should buy. First of all, it should be an AMD cpu and I got 2 types of cpu which is the FX series and the Phenom series. I can't make a decision so please help me choose one (i dont care about the price, just need a good cpu for gaming). And if I do this upgrade, will it solve the "unstable" fps problem? For example, i get like 100 fps in a game and as soon as the battle starts, the fps drops to 20-35.

My motherboard is Asus M5A78L-M LX3, i know its old but it still supports AM3+ socket cpus and my current cpu is AMD Athlon II x2 245 (its very old). HELPPP :)

Solution
No OC = no problem. Power phases have much more to do with stability under OC conditions. Higher power phases generally have a lot smaller ripple, so a cleaner dc voltage, makes for a more stable oc. Since you are thinking of putting a 84w CPU in a board designed for 95w max CPUs, any OC will raise that beyond the 95w limit, and there is a small chance of physically harming the mobo. With a 3+1 power phase, there is a much greater likelihood that the CPU will be so unstable you won't be able to OC at all beyond the turbo setting.

What's your budget? As long as your CPU is 3GHz and 4 cores it should be enough for 100FPS in a game. Also, if that's on the loading screen, the FPS is only low because there are never that many frames on a loading screen.

(deleted suggestion) [forgot it was am3 socket]

Fx 6300 should suffice , the 6 cores will be enough for gaming for now , but in the future , something like an fx 8350 would be more viable , as the 8 cores would be more useful. However , your motherboards TDP is 85w , so your best option would be a fx 6300 (fx 8320 is 125w Tdp , would not work with your motherboard) If you plan on doing something like 3d animation or intensive video editing , save up for a new motherboard and fx 8230 or upwards , but the fx 6300 would be fine for gaming.
Out of curiosity , what is your graphics card?

Since I'm not a very intensive gamer, I don't have the best graphics card, its GT 640 (still get high fps with this). Also, will this cpu solve my fps problem?? (one that i mentioned), What about the Phenom series? :D

Oh , in that case , a AMD Phenom II x4 series CPU would work just fine , if not better than a fx series cpu would , as it would fit into that category of "card/cpu matchups." Video here of someone with a AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition 3.4 Ghz and a Nvidia GT 640 playing Assassin's Creed IV : Black Flag at 30 fps
But , the fx 6300 is faster , and will last longer , so you could go for that and upgrade your other components over time.

So if i get the fx, i wont have to worry anymore about the fps drops right after entering a battle?

Nope! It would work fine!
Another video here of someone with an exact build like yours , only they have a gt 630 ,not 640 , and the 640 is faster!
As you can see ,they are playing at max with satisfactory fps.
If you can put them down to mid-maybe high , and sacrifice some eye candy for frames , you will be fine!
It would most defiantly be more stable as well.

Yes , most likely.
It would defiantly be more stable in general , unless your PSU can't take the new CPU.
Bronze rated 430w+ would be fine.

You could overclock it if you really wanted to (I wouldn't recommend it at your level , just wait it out a bit until you know a bit more about pcs, no offence ,I killed my first gaming rig with my first overclock. Wouldn't want you to experience the same problem.) , but you would want to buy an aftermarket cooler , not using the stock one. But 3.5 GHz (Stock clock) would be absolutely fine with the 6 cores for your rig , no need to overclock.
And no worries , enjoy your new cpu!

His board will throttle any FX cpu. An anemic 3+1 phase power. You want 8+2. Even the four core FX chips suck down lots of juice. Don't even think about the six and eight core variants. His board will go "poof"!

lolichop. Your board will probably burst into flames with a 6300 or 8320. Probably taking your ram and psu and processor down with it. Don't waste your money. Best case scenario they throttle and run about half their rated speed. Even a 4300 will throttle. Take my word for it. To run a 6300 or 8320 you need a full sized ATX board with heatsinks on the vrm section and 8+2 phase power. Your board has a paltry 3+1. That is a toy motherboard.

I neglected to examine the "LX3" part of the motherboard title.
That could have gone badly.
My apologies lolichop , I take all blame for that , it was my stupidity of not fully reading the description of the question.

i have a question,,, then why does the asus website mentions that my board can support fx??

Check your CPU/RAM usage while gaming in task manager to find out if the lag is actually caused by the CPU. If CPU usage is 100% when the lag happens, you can be sure that a new CPU will help out.

If I were in the same position, I'd just go with the FX-6300. That board you have is not great, but it should handle a 95W CPU as long as you don't overclock.

Yeap, im 100% sure that is the CPU problem cause i never use all 6GB ram. Also, according to bmacsys, will the fx wont work and it will "burn"?

The 3+1 power phase should be fine at stock clocks and voltage, it just won't handle any sort of OC beyond turbo.

Personally, is deal with the fps problems for a little longer, save up $100 or so, and get a 970/990 mobo paired with an 8320. That combination will handle any game currently out, most of the upcoming games, aswell as any productivity apps
