I am installing a SSD in a Toshiba laptop to replace a failing HDD. I have created an Image of the HDD using Windows. I insttall the SSD, and the BIOS sees it. I start the computer using a Windows recovery disk and select the load image option. The process starts, but then I get an error message indicating there is no available drive for the image to too. The hints have me check to make sure the SSD is not "Excluded". It is not. Any ideas?

Solution
I think you can use Partition Magic to solve your problem. Currently you are trying to squeeze 3lbs of stuff in 1 lb bag

Use PM re-arrange the partition then you should be OK

The old HDD is 320GB, the new SSD is 128GB. So is that what widows is looking at? The HDD only has about 40GB of stuff on it so I assumed that the SSD would be plenty big. Are there any programs that can load the image onto a smaller drive?

It has more to do with the partition size than the space used when it comes to using Windows to restore the image you created using Windows.

What brand of SSD did you buy? Most come with cloning software or have it available as a download from the manufacturer's web site. You would leave the current drive in place and use a SATA to USB cable to connect the SSD to the computer to clone it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I understand the partition issue. So I should make the partition on the 320GB drive smaller. Since I am not familiar with the software, will I tell it to change the partition to 128GB? Or should it be smaller since not all the space on a drive is availavble. Do the partition sizes have to match exactly?

My thanks to firewire and kenrivers for their suggestions. I ended up paying $30 for the Notebook Drive Upgrade Kit from Apricorn. It recognized the different drive sizes, partitions etc., made the necessary adjustments and copied the old HDD to the new (smaller) SSD perfectly. The laptop is up and running, and much faster.

Glad to hear you got it solved.
