Window 8 Black screen upon login

Help! After an automatic update, I get a black screen (after login) where only the mouse pointer works and the desktop does not appear. The task manager and resource manager still work. If I logout the splash screen returns. If I mouse over to the far lower right, hold the shift key down, and click on the power opt selecting restart, I can bring up troubleshooting options. But nothing there appears to work. Dell Insprion with windows 8.

Open Task Manager, and click File -> Run New Task. Type explorer.exe in that box. That should at least get the desktop up.

Is explorer.exe in the process list? Try killing it and starting it again. Also see if opening a folder with the Run New Task works like C:\ or %SYSTEMROOT%.

Sometimes booting into Safe Mode can allow more troubleshooting. With the Run New Task box enter msconfig. Go to the Boot tab and check Safe Mode. Also you can select Networking if you want that. Once you hit Apply and close that it will ask you if you want to restart. Once you restart it should boot into Safe Mode and will boot into safe mode every time until you open msconfig and uncheck Safe Mode.

It may be something you have starting up causing trouble. Take a look at your startup items and disable most of them to see if that helps at all.

I have the same problem atm, You have to go and start in safe mode and un install the update or restore your PC thats what i did
