I have a USB Logitech Microphone, (note: i run windows 8 x64) the problem is it isn't working in the slightest. Although when i plug it in, i get the sound that its plugged in, and when i check the recording tab it's there but when i talk the green bars do not appear where they should to signify that its working. I also tried to see if it IS working (which it isn't) by checking off 'Listen to this device' in the microphones properties, and with no luck, when i talk i hear nothing. Please help! I have been trying to fix this for hours.

Solution
Just to be sure, and sorry for sounding patronising: is the mute switch attached to the microphone's cord switched on?

Also, make sure options such as 'Use this device' (Microphone Properties > General), and 'Disable' (under the right-click menu when you click on your microphone's icon in the 'Sound' menu) are correctly set.
First try this guide:

http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-a-Mic-in-Windows-8

Just so we can be sure you've done all the standard stuff.

If that doesn't work, right-click on the little speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen on the taskbar (the icon you use for volume control). Select 'Recording Devices'. Go to the 'Levels' tab of recording devices. You'll see a slider there called 'Microphone Boost'. Try changing that slider and see if that helps.

The guide didn't help (ive seen it before when i was trying to fix it) the problem with that was, i was speaking during the part where it requires you to read a sentence aloud, but my microphone was not recognizing any noise so that wouldn't work. Then I tried the sliders that you described and that didn't work either.
I have had the microphone working for about 1 year now and i used it mainly for gaming, so i dont really know what happened that caused it to stop inputing audio.
