For my new rig, will mount i7 16GB RAM and 270x for heavy tasks.

Right now won't make OC.

- want to have the easiest to install various components and easiest to configure, never built a PC myself
- will work under load for video editing and related work, so need good air flow on installed components
- future proof for CPU/ram/GPU upgrades

What does I need to care about?
Number if USB3 connectors?
Number of PCIE x16?
Number of power phases?
New chipset?

Better a last generation H97/Z97 pretty basic or previous Z87 with better specs?

Solution
ATX would actually be better now that you mention it again.

I actually prefer Gigabyte, but you said the best which is why I put an Asus motherboard in there.

I've no bias, so any specific reason why it's better than Gigabyte?
Also better mATX or ATX considering my needs?

About ATX and Asus I can find within my budget ASUS H97-Plus Socket 1150 Intel H97 DDR3 SATA3 USB3 ATX

Otherwise can be always on budget an AsRock z97 Pro3/Pro4 or AsRock z87 Extreme 3.

What can be the best choice among this 4 models from, Gigabyte, Asus and AsRock? H97, Z97 or Z87 considering different mobo features?
