I want to pair a BenQ (XL2420Z) monitor 144hz with a PC. I understand the graphics card has to be dedicated. I am looking for something in the entry level and middle range What will be my best options on the GT, Radeon and Nivia models?

Depends on the game, but if you want out max out something like BF4 @1080p while still getting high fps, you'll need something like a GTX 780/R9 290 or better. If you can't afford those, it's probably better to get a 60Hz monitor and use more money on the GPU.

Although being 144Hz, the BenQ XL2420Z is a 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor. Anything over a GTX 780 will be more than enough to play games on Ultra settings with 60FPS+. With that said, I think it'd be kinda hard to get 144FPS on modern games without turning down some of the eye candy.
