I'm doing an 850$ build and at first I was gonna get the 297 but it seems like the h97 guard pro may be more future proof with 2 pci express slots rather than just 1. I'm new to this so I may be wrong, but would that mean I could crossfire down the road with the h97??

the H means that you can't OC with it and you can't CF with an H97
get the MSI Z97 MATE its good

I use AMD processors for builds under $1000. That way I can spend much more on other components, and not on the CPU. The CPU is 8-core, and performs well in all games, so most people wouldn't notice a difference from an Intel i5.
