I installed a new hybrid drive (Seagate 1TB SSD/HDD) in my ASUS G73jh and installed Windows 8.1 - everything was fine, I was copying iTunes media and various files from my old hard drive (through a SATA cable-USB 2.0 port) to the new one when it froze. Now freezes at various points during boot. Thinking it was a bad hybrid drive , I exchanged it for a new one, same model, and it's doing the exact same thing.

I re-installed Windows once, and the problem recurred - I went to the store and replaced the drive, re-installed and problem recurred. I am installing Windows fresh, no apps or anything - like its a brand new computer - because the old hard drive won't clone and the readers are dying. I've only copied files (some photos/videos and my iTunes library) from the old hard drive.

Update: just this AM, I physically removed the new drive and re-installed it in the other hard drive bay in my laptop. It seems to be working currently, but I believe that I did this with the other drive before I replaced it, and it worked for a while, but then started freezing again a day later.

I feel like you're not reading my posts. I am installing Windows clean onto an empty hard drive. The only other thing I've done is copy my iTunes library and some photo/video files to the new one. No cloning/migration software involved.

I checked that link - it recommends that I do a custom install, but I have been going with express install or whatever it's called - do you think that has made a difference?
