My house is 3 levels and about 3100 sq ft. I have the modem/router set up on the second level. The kids are on the top and bottom level and the internet signal is really weak. (but I get a good signal on the second level) I've heard good and bad things regarding this modem but I'm wondering if I can/should get another router,,,I'm using Comcast/xfinity Blast which is supposed to give me 50mps. 5 kids (5) netbooks, (5) tablets, (1) Playstation), (1) xbox, (1) Wii U and (2) laptops and 2 Ipads we all stream using Netflix or Hulu. Any help to get this going faster would be appreciated. I was also wondering about an extender, if I went this route would I need one for each level? and how far would my MPS fall? HELP! :-(

Solution
If you can get a "router" on each level it would be optimum. You would need cables between the router that has the actual internet connection and the other devices on each floor. You would want to run these "routers" as AP to make things simpler. You would also want different channels to avoid any interference.

Do not use wireless "extenders"/repeaters in your case. It is a waste of money. These devices even when they get good signal degrade the signal 50%. Running multiple makes it even worse. Now this is when you can get good signal levels. You must place the device where it gets good levels and send the signal to the place that gets poor. If you place the device in a area that already has poor singal levels it does not...

Generally it would work in a long house and you could place the repeater 1/2 between the router and the end user. In your case the signal is being blocked by the floor/ceiling which is a very common problem. No matter where you would place a repeater on the same level with the router it would still have to go though the floor/ceiling. If you were to place it on the other side of the floor/ceiling it would not get enough signal from the main route just as your end device do not.

You only real solution is to use wire. Best of course is ethernet if you can run it or if your house has it pre installed. The next options are to use the power cables with powerline network or to use the TV coax with MoCA.
