High CPU Temp When I Alt+Tab

I have a i7-4770k @ 4.2 GHz and the temperatures usually stay at a comfortable level when I game. However, when I play Borderlands 2 the temperatures stay at comfortable levels until I Alt+Tab. When I Alt+Tab the temps jump to 100c. Is this safe, as it goes away a second later? And is there any way to fix this?

Do you know why it would only go this high when I alt tab?

I used RealTemp for the temperatures. If I play the game for a while and close it normally, the temps never get near 100.

How can I see the temp with CPU Z?

The command Alt+Tab requires quite a lot of CPU usage because a lot of process occur to change from the full screen game to the desktop screen. The OS Windows uses a lot of effects and animation, and when you Alt+Tab, it tries to run the animation as smooth as possible.
It is in no means good to have a peak of temperature and then cool down in just a few seconds. Imagine your CPU stantly physically expanding and then contracting again, and those micro components all together. It is a lot of pain.

Nice fact. But I don't think the temp would go 100. That's why, I am suggesting OP to use CPUID HWMONITOR.

How can I see the temperatures in game? And is 35 to 40 a good idle temp for this processor at this speed?

Press Alt+Tab while gaming and see what's the temp. 35 C is the optimal temperature when the CPU is idle.

Solution

91 is the max temp it would reach with stock fan. 90 is the threshold temperature of your CPU. Surpassing the threshold temperature is not good for the processor, down the line. It could reduce the longevity.

It is highly recommended to purchase Hyper 212 EVO. Do not use the stock fan when CPU is stressed.
