Hi Guys, A long time ago in a galaxy far far away....I used to be a PC enthusiast! Spending my money and time tinkering around...My upgrading and gaming stopped back in 2006 I would guess...Last games I remember playing were Doom 3 *Struggled with graphics* and Unreal Tournament (1), Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Need for Speed and Medieval Total War.

I am left with a system which has the following:

CPU: AM2 AMD 3400+ or 4200+ (can't remember which)
MOBO: MSI K9 Neo2 Platinum (Nvidia SLI) Nforce 570 SLI
RAM: 3 GIG ---Probably budget version
Sound: Audigy 2 zs 7.1 + Gigaworks 750
GPU: Nvidia 7600 GT 256ram
PSU: Superflower 450W PSU
DVD: LG Bog standard
HD: 250GB SATA

I have just purchased 30" monoprice 2560x1600 monitor and a Zalman Z3 Plus Mid Tower white case.

My question is this...with the above hardware:
- What is the best ram that I can get to maximise my mobo for gaming without going crazy on price- 8GB
- What is best 6 pin GPU for the above system (was thinking about R9 270)

Basically i'm looking to do a bit of gaming again on the new monitor on a budget...I was thinking of the HD5700 but thought...nah...i'll probably buy something a bit better 2nd hand on ebay.

Stuff i've been thinking about is if I get the R9 270, will the limitations of the MOBO, RAM CPU etc be problematic etc? I've no idead....eg...GPU ram DDR5, system ram , DDR2..etc etc..no ideas any more!

All opinions are most welcome and if you need any other info please let me know.
Thanks a million
Shef

Slapping new RAM and a new GPU in that wont get you far, you're severely bottlenecked by that processor which you cant really upgrade because of that motherboard...speaking of motherboards.

Your motherboard is only AGP,the 270(And 99% of new cards) are PCI-E. So even if your PSU could handle it(a BIG maybe),it wouldnt go in your motherboard.

Sadly it is time you upgrade that whole machine from motherboard up.

Hmmm, thanks for the feedback guys...I think gaming is probably about 10%-15% of what i'll be doing...and mainly it'll be the older ones at that.

If I stuck to my system and went for an older "backward compatible" card, what do you think would be the best I could get away with? I take it the HD 5770 is a no no?

Cheers

(really... really...trying ...to..... hold on to the system :??: lol ) because it does the job :\ But will take the advice given after-all

£300 all inc is the budget but will be looking at cheap running costs too so not to kill the electricity bills :)

- Typically right now I'm 85% on MS Word and MS Office. The rest of the time it's a bit of music from Youtube or a downloaded movie hence, why my system is alright for what I do day-to-day....but to get back to a bit of gaming, I appreciate the need to spend...so here goes......

I guess i'd not need a new sound card or speakers, hopefully I can keep the SATA HD at 250gig and probably the DVD drive. I'm not expecting a sensational PC for that money but hey, I really do use if for mainly MS Office and need the new one to have a bit of umph for a bit more gaming these days.

Should we say Budget of perhaps £400 and I can probably save a few quid from ebay or something and buy it all for £300 ish?

Once again...all input and views really are appreciated and valued , thanks guys :)

thats brandnew items price if you are willing to buy a used part as the gfx card just get r9 270x capable of running many games on ultra at 1080p with 30fps+ and add one more 4gb ram and ull get upper mid end rig

from a gut that plays older games as like you got I do know with windows 7 there can be some small issues .. your iD games should be fine ubi soft some can be funny but will play [if you got far cry 1 on the dvd and not the 5 cd pack and running 64bit it may not load and as I did you got to load it on a 32bit os and copy the files to a disk or pen drive and copy it to your x86 file then copy 3 .dll files thets not in the newer windows -- got mine from a old copy of vista 64 ultimate--- and it may have a start the game issue but it works once going ] have not tried unreal 2004 yet but seeing you brought it up my do it next or halo1

long story short these old game that I had no issues with vista ultimate or xp do have some issues with 7 so far I have one of my many games that just don't work period [darkest of days]

your due for something fresh new and faster .. your money should be better spent on something up to date just my point above with newer windows you may have some kinda issues with the older games and with windows 8 or 8.1 I'm thinking it may not support them near as well as 7 is don't know . just glad I went with 7

Hi there, am still new to these forums and all but, in essence I posted a new topic as responses stopped here...Please take a look at the below and let me know your thoughts?

Hi guys..

Back again...:) the last thread for my hardware got a bit long so I thought I'd summarise here. Sorry to be a pain but It's come down to this...:??:

My existing system
CPU: AM2 AMD 3400+ or 4200+ (can't remember which)
MOBO: MSI K9 Neo2 Platinum (Nvidia SLI) Nforce 570 SLI
RAM: 3 GIG ---Probably budget version 2GB + 1GB
Sound: Audigy 2 zs 7.1 + Gigaworks 750
GPU: Nvidia 7600 GT 256ram
PSU: Superflower 450W PSU
DVD: LG Bog standard
HD: 250GB SATA

I have just purchased NEW 30" monoprice 2560x1600 monitor and a Zalman Z3 Plus Mid Tower white case.

After a few days of soul searching and budgeting and counting the pennies that I have...or don't have....it's come down to this...

OPTION 1
Upgrade the GPU to a HD5770 1Gig = £40GBP
Upgrade the RAM to 4 X 2gb Samsung = £30 GBP

Total = £70GBP

OPTION 2.

Add another £60 + above £70 £= 130...or at an extreme push, if you recommend, total to £150 and do a total budget upgrade and keep whatever I can (primarily the Sound card and DVD and HD and PSU) Got my new case and Monitor ( 30" monoprice 2560x1600 monitor and a Zalman Z3 Plus Mid Tower white case)

If you guys recommend option 2 and the budget upgrade, could you A) let me know what best system I can get for the budget is and B) in terms of %, if my old system is at 100% in terms of speed what would the new system be, eg. 120%

Really sorry guys but thats all my budget allows, my previous one of £300 was a bit too rushed and not through through.

More opinions and views the better and especially if its to do with the new system build. 85% office stuff and 15% older gaming from 2/3/4 years ago

Thanks
Shef

Hi Crispy, thanks for the "poke" :)

Andy suggestions as to a new £150 system (no case needed, no psu needed and no sound card needed and no HD needed)...or...I may be wrong on these as well :p

Advice most welcomed mate
thanks
