Hmm bit tricky question
CPU & GPU which stands for Central processing unit and GPU for graphics processing unit are the most hardware required for gaming although all computer parts plays factor in preformance and smoothness of gaming for example :
running on stereo 3.5mm plug from the motherboard can cause little bit stress on the cpu as the audio is processed through the processor if you plug in a sound card it can relief the cpu from that duty and gives a slight preformance boost also if you run an open world game like watch dogs or gta on an ssd you will notice the games runs smoother with no stuttering when transitioning from a zone to another due to the fast access rate that comes with the SSD and ram plays an important role in some games aswell although most games require 4gb to run with a max of 8gb at the mean time with a good 1600 or 1866 mhz on the bus speed will deliever good speed
this is hardware wise now software wise i guess what you mean by that is the overclocking part which you boost your pc hardware to beyond the limit that they are offered for,for a slight price of less lifetime by like 3-5% depending on how good you cool it,
