Can't decide between R9 280 and R9 280X

I am nearing the purchase of a new graphics card, and I have it narrowed to these two.

Now obviously the 280X is better. However I plan to OC whatever card I get. I have read the 7950 was always able to OC to be better than a 7970 at stock.

However I am wondering if I take both of the cards and OC them as much as I can, would it be worth the extra money to get the 280X?

I have seen benchmarks of the 280 being closer to a 270X than a 280X. And I have seen in the same ones of a 280X being closer to a 290 than a 280.

So I am really not sure where the value of the 280 is more than anything. I am pretty sure they are both based off of Tahiti and I am unsure about the upper limits of both cards while OC'd.

Also, would waiting a month on Tonga be worth the wait?

Please let me know

Thanks.

What is the price difference between a R9 280 and a R9 280X for you? The HD 7950 was quite a decent cheaper than the HD 7970.

Let's call it $50-$70 depending on the price that day. But I am not much concerned with the price nearly as much as I am with regards to performance comparisons.

Then get the R9 280X. It's definitely worth the extra $50 - $70.

But how does an OC 280 compare to an OC 280X?

It doesn't. An OC 280 will be about a 280X. So obviously an OC 280X would be better.

Wait for Tonga. You might as well, you can still buy the old stuff after.

The R9 280 and 280X are just rebrands of the old 7950/70, and Tonga will be actually a new GPU with better specs all around.

Hope that helps!
