Are PCI slots backwards compatible?

I have an OLD graphics card (nvidia gtx 9800 gtx+, with PCI 2.0) and an even older motherboards that all have only PCI 1.0 slot. I haven't decided which mobo to go with yet though. So what do you guys think?

Are SATA slots backwards compatible too?

PCIe is backwards compatible. I highly doubt a GTX 9800 would saturate the bandwidth provided from a PCIe 1.0 x16 slot, so you should be fine.
