Hi guys. Didn't come in here in a while. I'm looking for some hints on how to choose a new keyboard, since I didn't buy one in...10 years or so ? My old one died and I want to try something new. Thought about a mechanical keyboard, to get something good that will last me for a decent amount of time.

I game a lot, mostly on RTS and MOBAs, SC2 and League of Legends being some of the games I play the most. I do play a bit of FPS games too, but might as well not count it, I'm not trying to be competitive or anything there.

I did read about what are the specifications of every switches, but I didn't really feel like any of those were doing ALL that I wanted. For exemple, the clickiness of Blue switches was interesting to me, to help me notice that I did press the key, but I was told that they weren't good for double tapping ? Which would be pretty bad in RTS games... And keys that were good for double tapping weren't clicky...

Are Blue keys that bad for double tapping ? Or is it just a very sligt difference ?
And also, what would be the cheapest mechanical keyboard that you'd recommend me considering that ?

I have one of the original Razer Blackwidows with blue switches. I actually like the way double taps feel on them. It’s a little hard to explain, but since the release point is above the activation point, I actually found myself activating a key twice while only clicking it once. That is to say, on the first tap, I trigger the click and the activation. On the way up, I reset the activation while staying below the click reset point. There’s a slight increase in resistance when you get to the click reset, so I’m able to stop right at the threshold to activate the key at the second tap.

If I were you, I’d go to my local Best Buy or computer store and try out their floor models to see which switch type suits you better. The BB I went to had a Logitech G710+ (the brown switch version) and the new updated Blackwidow with Razer’s custom green switches, which are basically blue switches with a slightly higher activation point and negligibly lower tolerances. I personally didn’t like the brown switches that much. I felt like the lack of auditory feedback made them less satisfying than the clicky blues.

I agree with Karsten75. I’m sure the ‘pro gamers’ blow the differences out of proportions. Nothing should be taken over personal preference, especially if you’re not that competitive of a gamer. Just pick whichever one you like and you’ll learn to use it well!

If you want the cheapest possible keyboard, I think monoprice has so-so blue switch ones. I read that it’s a rebranded XArmor board or something. It has 6 key rollover. That may or may not be enough for you.

CM Storm has some cheap ones. The non-backlit Blackwidows are also reasonably priced, which is surprising for a Razer product. Who looks at their keyboard when they’re gaming anyway?
