I want to replace the outdated pentium 4 one-core processor on my desktop. I have a motherboard that's old and supports core 2 processors only (no core i) so do I get an old but powerfull core 2 quad or do i throw my computer in the garbage and get a new one with a more up-to-date processor like a core i5 knowing that i'm on a tight budget. if you have tried both processors (core 2 quad, core i5) what are the differences in terms of performance and heat. thank you

Get a new up to date system. Even an i3 4130/4150 would be faster than any core 2 based desktop CPU.

I would definitely go with a new system. Whether you go with the two core i3 or quad core i5 really depends on your expectations.
