So I changed my motherboard to an M-ATX solution to fit it in a smaller case (I'm off to Uni and didn't want to have to transport my old larger one.)

The new board I have purchesed is this... http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H77%20Pro4-M/

On the website it lists the board as having 1 PCIe x16 slot yet from the picture it appears to have 3, I think this is because once the x16 slot is used the rest are 'demoted' down?

So my question is if i have a graphics card that uses x16 and a sound card that uses x8 does it matter which slot i plug them in (e.g. will plugging the sound card into the x16 slot mean that the graphics card will run at x8? And if so how do I tell which is which?)

Sorry for the amount of text I just wasn't sure how to word this post.

Any help would be appreciated thanks :)

Solution
If it's a PCI Express 3.0 x16 it should go on the PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot to run at it's full potential... if you use it on the PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (with x4 max) it will run in PCIe x4 mode.

The sound card can run on any PCI Express slot it can fit on, so the 2.0 x 16 slot is the appropriate slot for it.

PCIe Slots:
• 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (PCIE1: x16 mode)
• 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIE3: x1 mode; PCIE4: x4 mode)
• 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot
Your motherboard has:
- 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (PCIE1: x16 mode)
- 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIE3: x1 mode; PCIE4: x4 mode)

Its best to put your gpu on the first PCIE 3.0 X16 slot for optimum performance.
The other two are PCIE 2.0 X16 slots which can be used for any other devices that are PCIE compatible.
On the second slot, it will run at x4 mode and the third will run at x1 mode.
