I've had my setup for 4 years. Over the past few months, my computer (windows 7) would not recognize my hard drive from time to time. Device Manager wouldn't have it nor would bios.

After a few minutes unplugging it and re-plugging it into the SATA, it would come back on.

Today, I go to turn on the computer and the same problem happened again. Except, I haven't been able to fix the problem. My OS is on a SSD. My programs (except for a few) and storage are on the drive that seems to be dead. I can't tell if it is running and not being recognized or if it is totally dead.

Do you believe the hard drive is toast?
Or could it be a mother board issue?
Should I bring it over to a friends place to see if his mac recognizes it?

Thanks for your time~

Yes, you should test it in another computer to see if the hard drive gets recognized. If it does get recognized by the bios and device manager in another computer, the hard drive is not toast and maybe its just your motherboard. But before you go and try it on another computer. Try to connect it in other sata connectors of your motherboard, maybe its just the sata connector that it is plugged in. maybe. If it doesn't get recognized by other sata connectors go try it in another pc. If it gets recognized and it works great maybe think about replacing your motherboard.

Thanks both. I've tried it in multiple SATA connectors with no response. That has done it in the past. I'll try to, at least, grab the files via a friends computer.

I'd hate for this to be a motherboard problem (of course). Everything else on the comp works fine though. The other drives connected to the motherboard work.

It might not be a motherboard problem at all or sata connectors. It might be a hard drive failure as techyinaz said. And i agree as well, when you get it detected again imidiately get everything off it. And get your self a new wd hdd or seagate barracuda. Toodles!
