So I finally decided to try and upgrade my old computer. Here's all or most of the information about the computer : http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay/?spf_p.tpst=kbDocDisplay&spf_p.prp_kbDocDisplay=wsrp-navigationalState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c02280418-25%257CdocLocale%253D%257CcalledBy%253D&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

The only thing I've upgraded so far is the HDD from 750GB to 1TB and that's because the old one was going bad. I'm mainly looking to upgrade the graphics and PSU because they are pretty bad. So any suggestions? :D

I forgot the obvious things xD Yes I'd like to upgrade it for mid level gaming. Not like extreme gaming with ultra high settings, but enough to play something like GMOD on high settings. @Wizard Bear, I'd say my budget is ~150-200. You can suggest things lower or a bit higher than that though :p

no dont listen to wizard bear giving you a crappy gpu. I'm not trying to disrespect you or anything and i understand why you recommend its 1st best product on amazon. but i think we know a 140$ r9 270 is like a gtx 760. if you could spend 250 or 280$ you could get a r9 280x yes its overkill but if you plan on playing more games in the future a r9 280 with 3gb of vram is it if your not upgrading in a while. the r9 270 will play battlefield on ultra so you can just max your settings anyways but a r9 280x can play it on ultra with higher fps and settings. i would recommend 650w or 750w just in case you upgrade anything else and it needs more power. I would recommend a evga 750w fully modualr, gold, 10 year warranty psu for 79$ bucks you could get a 650w if you want but just giving you a good deal.

It's in Canadian currency xD Not much of a difference though. I have 4 GB of RAM and it's not upgradeable unless I upgrade other components.

Sorry, but I don't necessarily agree with what you just said. I admit, the GPU isn't that great, but it certainly isn't "Crappy". When I give solutions, I almost always try to respect someones budget (Not saying you aren't). You gave them something that totally went over the budget, which I was trying to stay away from. I admit, there are better cards for that price, but I was saying it was "Very nice" compared to new graphics cards you can buy for that $120 value. I had to account for the PSU and possible ram.

I was being stupid and didn't assume they wanted to continue upgrading. This does make a problem because they are running on a Micro Motherboard with LGA 775 with dual core Processor, which upgrading those requires a whole new budget. Again, I admit the GPU isn't the best, but it's an alright 750 Ti.

I can see why you would tell me to get those products as it would make it easier to play games that require better GPU's but I don't plan on running any high-level game on it's highest setting. I plan on sticking to low-medium graphics. Thanks for the input though.

yeah man i understand your point i'll see if i can get him a pc partpicker list of just a good psu and gpu

If you can get more money, it may be smart to scavenge the HDD, Case, Wifi adapter, and Possibly RAM (not sure what model it is). - If you do this, make a new thread with a title similar to "New PC Build". Those attract lots of attention, and everyone here genuinely wants to help out.

For your current budget, again, it may be best for you to stick with a $120ish GPU (Though I supposedly give out "crappy" GPU's :p). You could go with something more than a 500 Watt PSU, but that would be if you're upgrading.

Hope this helped, and be sure to mark as best answer if you found it as so :)

its better to have upgrading opportunities that way instead of replacing the mobo and cpu you just replace the cpu when you can. If he ever needs more watts for another gpu or somehow things need more power(not likely but) it would be good also psu lose effectivness overtime so having that protects a little more. spending a little more if your not upgrading for while will keep you happier in the long run

Yeah, the higher the PSU's wattage is the more potential the build can have. The only problem with this model is the Cpu and Motherboards socket type are so old and obscure that it's hard to find upgrade-able parts. In this case, more money will give a much greater quality and potential.

yeah the 775 socket is over and even the lga 1150 is coming to end but in like 2 years and even then it'll get support with broadwell. skylake FTW. another thing to consider is upgrading this build over time with a new mobo and cpu. That cpu will definatly bottleneck a r9 270 and gtx 750ti

Ill say this on the GPU issue, i have a GTX 750ti and it is fantastic. Now on to the other issue at hand, this is an of the shelf bare bones PC the inherently leave almost no room to upgrade at all and even when you do find something compatable the system is built in such a way that you cant just toss in the new part, i would personally recomend you save up a bit more cash and build a new rig out right. I have seen a few that come in at right around $530 (usd) My build cost me roughly 830 and is more computer than i had ever actually dreamed of.

To answer your question, it will run steam games on low-medium (The motherboard still confuses me), and I'm not sure what you mean by "How long will it last me"

Try to upgrade the PC as soon as possible. You'll be able to use the GPU and PSU that you'll buy, the HDD you bought, and possibly Ram.

well you play some games mainly on low to med with 40fps or something. I was just pointing out how a r9 270 is much better for the money its just that he should save his money sorry but that psu, cpu, mobo is just not going to cut it.

Once you can upgrade out of the CPU and Motherboard, that GPU's potential will show, and you'll see why it was worth upgrading. However, I'm totally for you using this for now, as it will still let you play and enjoy computer gaming instead of waiting for the money to upgrade.
